Another horsie with the Copic Sketchbook program.
I need to take my sketchbook to the barn one of these days.
Bay is probably one of my my favourite coat colours, even though it’s quite common….what’s yours?
Day 2 - Favourite Animal
Horsie! I used a photo of a Gypsy Vanner for reference. I’ve never seen a Gypsy Vanner in real life (apparantly they’re a fairly new breed and still quite rare in North America), but they are one of my favourite horses to look at when I go on my horse photo/video binges. They’re relatively small, and were bred by gypsies to be fancy and colourful, like the gypsies!
Click here for a cheesy video of gypsy vanners running around!ACTUALLY they were bred by Walking People/Irish Travellers/Rroma/etc. to be the kind of horse that could do anything. Pull a cart, plow a field, etc etc. They were named (in a racist manner) Gypsy (that’s a racist slur) Vanners (Caravans) because you know what they did? Pulled the Traveller’s houses. They’re a beautiful breed yes, my favorite in fact. But they weren’t bred to be “colorful like gypsies”. They’re also known as Cobs, sometimes with the area they were bred in put in front. IE: Irish Cob or Welsh Cob. Mostly they’re just Cobs.
I know someone who grew up with these beauties. You can ask her about them. She’s a beautiful Rroma woman.
She’s accurate about the new breed part in regards to America. They’ve only been in NA for a short amount of time, the official US Breed Registry having been established in ‘96. Only a little over 2K Gypsy Vanners live in the United States.
They were bred to be colorful because they were also used in shows. That has been continued because they are flashy horses in the show ring and over jumps.
Welsh Cob is a different horse. Irish Cob is a Gypsy Vanner.
Sorry for the fact bomb on your lovely picture.
Oops! I feel like I just got *told*. I am not an expert on them as I’ve never even *seen* one, but for the record, I was aware when I did this that the horses are Irish Cobs, I just like the term “gypsey vanner” because it sounds fanciful. It was also my understanding that the paint colours were bred in to add flashiness. The “colourful like the gypsies” comment was tongue in cheek; I don’t think calling me a racist was really called for x.X ;;
Either way they’re lovely horses, and I’m sure they don’t care what they get called. I hope I get to meet one some day!
** OK Edited because I had a conversation with these guys and they’re pretty nice folks….it’s fair enough that “gypsy” is a pejorative term. I didn’t realize it was that bad! I won’t use it anymore. Ya learn something new every day!

Valentine #2
Watercolour and ink. So snuggly <3 These colours are very relaxing.
Ugh! I think I need to give up on using Photoshop as a painting tool. For some reason I just canNOT get that beast to work for me. I’m so frustrated with this right now!!
I spent way too long on it for all the things that are wrong with it.
Oh well.
I decided to do a series of my favourite “badass ladies”. I’ve seen some other artists doing this and it looks fun. I might have to revisit poor Katara later so she doesn’t look so…weird.
Lesson learned, time to friggen sleep already.
I downloaded this little “Copic Sketchbook” program. Finally, a free program for Mac! It’s no Paint, but I’ll take it!!! Fun enough to muck around with. I like the whispy colours.
And I drew this because honestly, who doesn’t love ponies?
PS Sorry I haven’t updated in ages…I’m lazy xD
Here is a crappy photo of this “WIP” I started today. I just picked a random pose from Pose Maniacs and ran with it.
I’m not actually using these lines, I just inked the sketchy-sketch really quickly, then constructed a make-shift light box out of a lamp with an upside down shade and a piece of glass from a frame in order to trace it onto a new page for clean outlines.
Unfortunately the paper I’m using isn’t liking the watercolour much. OH WELL. It’ll still be fun.
Valentine numero uno!
The watercolours never look great scanned…but there it is. They’re quite small, like half a regular card size.
